Northern lights in Tromsø today: what matters
Whether you see northern lights over Tromsø tonight depends on three things: the sky must be dark, it must open up above you, and something must be happening up there. The city's location works in your favor. Tromsø sits directly beneath the aurora oval, a belt of aurora around the geomagnetic North Pole.6 So activity here is rarely in short supply. That makes watching the clouds all the more important.
It is dark enough for the northern lights in the region from late August to early April.1 During this period the question of tonight comes up every day. Outside the season you can skip the forecast: even a strong northern light remains invisible if the sun barely sets or not at all. So check the calendar first, then the sky, and only at the end the forecast numbers.
For the evening itself you need several tools: an activity forecast, a look at the clouds, and a live image of the sky. None of them is enough on its own. High activity is useless to you behind a closed cloud ceiling, and a cloudless sky remains empty when everything is still above. Only together do they paint a picture that lets you decide whether to zip up your jacket and boots or spend the evening somewhere warm.

The short-term forecast: what it shows and what it does not
A good first stop for tonight is the Norwegian Center for Space Weather, NOSWE for short. It publishes a short-term forecast for Tromsø for the moment along with predictions for one hour and four hours.2 That lets you plan not the whole week but the next few hours. That is exactly what matters when you want to know whether heading outside now is worth it or whether you might as well have another cup of tea.
Read the forecast like a weather report for the sky above you, just without clouds: it tells you something about the activity, nothing about the visibility. If the value in the forecast for the next hour rises, that is a good reason to check the cloud cover. If it stays calm, it can still flicker, because northern lights follow no schedule. A forecast shifts probabilities; it cannot promise anything.
Practically speaking, this means: open the page in the early evening, remember the trend, and check again later. If the forecast changes significantly within a short time, that points to movement in the sky. Bookmark the page on your phone. Then you will not have to search long outside when your fingers get cold and the battery drains faster in the cold than at home.

If the forecast for the next hour is rising and the sky is clear, this is your moment.2
The northern lights can appear throughout the night, often between 8:00 PM and 2:00 AM.5
Some tours head inland or to Finland in that case.7
The all-sky camera confirms that something is glowing right now. A clear view is all that matters.3
On the safari of this page, you will ride again during your stay until you have seen the lights.
The strength of geomagnetic activity is given by the planetary K-index, short Kp. The Kp index ranges from 0 to 9.
Kp index: the number that pops up everywhere
When you open a northern lights app, the Kp index is the first thing you see. On its scale from 0 to 9 it shows how active the Earth's magnetic field is right now.4 The higher the value, the more restless the geomagnetic field. Because the number is displayed so prominently, it often seems like the only criterion. For Tromsø it is worth interpreting it correctly before you make your evening depend on it.
The location of the city is decisive. Tromsø sits directly beneath the northern lights oval.6 People living farther south need strong activity for the oval to stretch down to them. You are already beneath it in Tromsø. A low value here is no reason to write off the evening immediately, and a high value is no guarantee when a thick layer of clouds hangs between you and the sky.
Use the Kp index as a mood barometer, not a traffic light. A high value makes you want to look outside. A low value does not mean nothing is happening. What remains decisive is whether the sky above you is clear. If you combine the Kp index with the short-term forecast and a look at the cloud map, you make better decisions than someone who stares at a single number all evening.

Webcam and all-sky camera: looking up
A real picture of the sky is solid confirmation. The Tromsø Geophysical Observatory operates an all-sky camera whose images you can find via the Norwegian Space Weather Center.3 Such a camera looks at the entire sky above its location with a fisheye lens. If you see green veils or arcs there, the activity is no longer a calculated result but visible to the eye.
Keep in mind that a camera looks from just one point. It may be clear above it while a bank of clouds hangs over your hotel, or the other way around. The camera therefore answers whether something is happening right now, but not whether you will see it from your window. For that second question, you need a cloud map for the region and, ultimately, your own eyes.
A tip for checking by webcam: do not leave the page running continuously, but check at intervals. Northern lights often come in waves, and between waves the sky can look empty for minutes. If you give up after an empty frame, you may miss the most beautiful moment. Keep your clothing and camera ready so you can be at the door in a few minutes once it turns green.
The evening time window
Northern lights can appear at any time during the night, but in Tromsø they are often most active between roughly 20:00 and 02:00.5 This window is long, and that is the good news: you do not have to pin everything to a single moment. If you are ready early in the evening and have patience, you have several hours during which the sky can open up and the activity can pick up again.
Plan your evening so that you are ready within this window. Eat something warm beforehand, charge your phone and camera, and lay out your clothes already in the afternoon. The less you have to organize later, the faster you are outside when the forecast picks up. Especially in winter this matters, because in frost every minute you spend searching in the hallway feels endless.
And if it gets late? Then a last look before you go to bed is worthwhile. Even the time after midnight still falls within the window when northern lights are often most active.5 Set an alarm if you need to, take a quick look at the forecast and the camera, and then decide. It costs you little sleep and may bring you exactly the moment you traveled north for.
When the clouds do not move away
If a closed layer of clouds hangs over Tromsø, no forecast will help you. Then the only option is to change location. Some tours on such nights head inland or across the border into Finland, where the drier continental climate often provides a clearer sky.7 On your own that is hard to organize, especially in winter, at night, and without a car. Nobody can give you a fixed probability for northern lights: it depends above all on the clouds on that particular evening.
So you get a feel for the distances: by bus the ride from Tromsø to Kilpisjärvi in Finland takes about 3.5 hours.9 That is not a spontaneous detour. If you drive that far, you need someone who knows the winter roads, can judge the weather situation, and keeps an eye on the sky along the way while you focus on looking.
For nights with poor prospects, the northern lights safari on this page offers an unlimited option: you can join as many times as you like during your stay until you see the lights. The organizer does not offer a refund if the lights do not appear. The option is especially interesting if you spend several nights in Tromsø and want to keep the choice of evening open.
Guided tour or heading out on your own?
Reading the forecast is one thing. Showing up at a dark place at night in the cold is another. If you are out without a car, a guided tour makes sense. The northern lights safari on this page lasts 6 hours and is available from $61. Guides are available in English, Spanish, German, Italian and French.
On GetYourGuide the safari scores 4.55 out of 5 from 8,349 reviews. The guide and the transport each rate 4.8, and the value for money rates 4.5. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the start, the booking is made now and payment comes later. That fits well with a plan that depends on the sky and can change at short notice.
If you prefer to go on your own, you will also find places with little light in town, such as the lake Prestvannet or the bay Telegrafbukta.1011 Then the rule is: check the forecast in the afternoon, check the clouds in the evening, check the camera during the active window, and go. Whatever you decide, the forecast helps you choose the right evening instead of heading out into the cold every night on blind luck.

At the NOSWE Space Weather Center. There you will find a short-term forecast for Tromsø and predictions for one hour and four hours.2
Is there a northern lights webcam for Tromsø?
Yes, an allsky camera. The Tromsø Geophysical Observatory operates a sky camera whose images are accessible via the Space Weather Center.3
Which Kp value is enough in Tromsø?
The number alone doesn't decide it. The Kp index ranges from 0 to 9.4 Tromsø sits right under the northern lights oval; a clear sky matters more than the value.6
What time of night is worth looking up?
Mostly between 20:00 and 02:00. Northern lights can appear throughout the night, but they are often most active during this window.5
What do I do if the sky is overcast?
